Process Operation and Rules

The "Encouraging Students of the Department of English Translation and Interpreting to Become Effective Literary Translators with an Artistic and Aesthetic Vision" Competition, organized as part of the 2021-2022 academic year Scientific Research Project (BAP) of Çağ University (approved by the BAP Commission under the decision number 2022-1-4, project number 2022/3), aims to support and reward quality literary translations in the field of storytelling, as determined by the Selective Scientific Committee.

Application Duration and Conditions

  1. The competition is open only to third-year students of the Department of English Translation and Interpreting at Çağ University enrolled in the "Literary Texts Translation" course.

  2. The selected work for translation, Aphra Behn's The Unhappy Mistake; Or, The Impious Vow Punish'd, will be sent to candidates in PDF format via email.

  3. The winning Turkish translation will be announced by the Selective Scientific Jury Committee.

  4. Candidates interested in applying must complete the application form shared on the page, starting from Wednesday, June 15, 2022, and submit it by Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 13:00.

a) The competition will be held in two rounds. In the first round on June 30, 2022, one selected page from Aphra Behn's The Unhappy Mistake; Or, The Impious Vow Punish'd will be sent to contestants for translation into Turkish in PDF format via email. The first round will conclude with participants submitting their translations by email by July 1, 2022, at 13:00. No submissions after July 1, 2022, at 13:00 will be accepted. Results will be announced on July 8, 2022.

The one-page translated work should be sent as a Word document (.doc or .docx) with the file name as the translator's own name and student number to the following email address: edebicevirmentesvik@cag.edu.tr

b) The top three candidates deemed successful in the first round will proceed to the final second round. The entire work of Aphra Behn's The Unhappy Mistake; Or, The Impious Vow Punish'd will be sent in Turkish to the candidates' email addresses in PDF format on July 9, 2022, Saturday.

c) For the final round, the work translated from the original language to Turkish must be submitted both by email and post by the deadline of September 9, 2022, Friday, at 17:00. No translations sent after September 9, 2022, at 17:00 will be accepted.

d) The translated work should be sent as a Word document (.doc or .docx) with the file name as the translator's own name and student number to the following email address. Additionally, the work should be delivered by post to the address below.

e) The award ceremony will take place on December 9, 2022, between 11:00-12:00 at Çağ University İlhan Yücel Conference Hall.

Evaluation

  1. The Selective Scientific Committee will finalize the evaluation based on the Evaluation Criteria and Scoring Scale in November.

  2. The winning works will be announced and awarded to the winning translator following the approval of the Selective Scientific Committee. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive their plaques respectively.

  3. The first-place winning work will be re-evaluated by the Selective Scientific Committee, and feedback will be provided to the translator, allowing time for corrections.

  4. After re-examination by the Selective Scientific Committee, the translated work will be sent to a contracted publisher for printing.

Award

The 1st place winning translation will be printed and published by the publisher. Additionally, plaques will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
