ABOUT GETEM

GETEM as an Internet Library

The internet library project designed by Boğaziçi University Technology and Education Laboratory for the Visually Impaired (GETEM) aims to provide access to information resources for visually impaired individuals. This project not only serves visually impaired individuals (approximately 500,000 in Türkiye), but also individuals who cannot fully benefit from printed resources due to other disabilities (such as paralysis or dyslexia). The publications in the library are mainly in Turkish and English.

In addition to books such as stories, novels, and poetry, the library includes course materials (books, articles, lecture notes) used at all levels of education, recordings of some courses and conferences, as well as scientific articles and books. In addition, various types of content such as radio plays, MP3 versions of audio-described films, and audio guides for computers and smart devices are also included in the GETEM catalog.

For this purpose, the works in the database are provided to users in electronic text, human voice, and computer voice formats. The works within GETEM are produced by volunteer readers as well as obtained through cooperation with other libraries serving visually impaired individuals. In addition, through collaborations with various institutions, users who are not familiar with computers and the internet can benefit from some of the works via telephone.

Anyone who documents that they are visually impaired with a medical report or disability ID card can become a member of the GETEM library and access the available works 24/7 from anywhere with internet or telephone access. The works can be listened to directly on the website or downloaded and copied to portable devices such as MP3 players for use anywhere.
