Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus Conference: DADHAM Begins Its Scientific Activities
On the occasion of the establishment of the Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Law Application and Research Center (DADHAM) within our university, a conference titled “Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus” was held on March 9, 2026.
The honorary guest of the conference, hosted by our university, was Mr. Ersin Tatar, the 5th President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The program began with opening speeches by DADHAM Director Dr. Sami Doğru, Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. M. Tevfik Odman, and Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Koç.
Following the opening speeches, the honorary guest Mr. Ersin Tatar and invited speaker Rear Admiral (Ret.) Cem Gürdeniz delivered their speeches.
In his speech, Mr. Tatar emphasized that DADHAM will play an important role in defending the rights and interests of both Türkiye and the TRNC in the Eastern Mediterranean and stated that the TRNC should be recognized as an independent state.
Rear Admiral (Ret.) Cem Gürdeniz stated that a second Treaty of Sèvres is being imposed on Türkiye in the Eastern Mediterranean and that this is unacceptable. Addressing the students, he said, “This watch is yours.”
Subsequently, the session titled “Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus”, chaired by Ambassador (Ret.) Prof. Dr. Ali Engin Oba, took place.
In this session, Prof. Dr. Yücel Acer (Member of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, Faculty Member at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, and Board Member of DEHUKAM), Ambassador (Ret.) Yiğit Alpogan (Advisor at AVİM), and Dr. Mustafa Başkara (Director of DEHUKAM) participated as speakers and shared their evaluations on issues such as maritime jurisdiction disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean, regional developments, and Türkiye’s maritime spatial planning.
At the end of the program, the opening of DADHAM was carried out by Mr. Ersin Tatar and Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Koç.
DADHAM will conduct scientific research particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the fields of maritime affairs and maritime law, develop academic collaborations, and contribute to scientific studies related to maritime and maritime law.
